Welded steel fittings are used where the line is joined by welding rather than by thread or flange. Once welded, the joint has no leak path, which suits it to buried lines and to services where a threaded connection would loosen over time.

Elbows, tees, reducers and caps are supplied in the wall thicknesses that match the pipe schedule, so the weld preparation lines up correctly.
