ANSI Gate Valves

Gate valves are the basic isolating element in flow control. They give a straight through bore, so the pressure loss is very low. The closing member — the wedge — travels perpendicular to the pipe axis and either cuts the flow or lets it pass.

Sealing is metal to metal in one direction, and the wedge and body seats are usually set at an angle of 3–6 degrees (conical faces).

They are operated fully open or fully closed. This product group is not used in a part-open position for flow adjustment.

They can be driven by handwheel, gearbox, or electric and/or pneumatic actuator. The number of turns to open and close depends on the stem pitch and the stroke, so the operating time is long.

Handwheel operation is recommended up to 10” Class 150, 8” Class 300 and 6” Class 600. Above these sizes a gearbox makes opening and closing considerably easier.
