Lug type vulcanised butterfly valves are chosen because they are cheaper than other valve designs and, being lighter, need less support. The disc sits in the middle of the pipe. A shaft passes through the disc to an actuator outside the valve. Turning the actuator rotates the disc parallel or perpendicular to the flow. Unlike a ball valve, the disc always stays in the flow, so it causes a pressure drop even when open. This product is manufactured in ductile iron with a nickel-plated disc.
