Expansion Joints

Lens Type Expansion Joints

Lens expansion joints are pressurised expansion elements for service where higher pressure and higher temperature call for a greater material thickness. They are preferred in every industry that uses pressure equipment and heat exchangers under those conditions, and their long service life is a further reason for the choice.

Lens type joints are among the expansion elements favoured in industrial plants in particular. They absorb large axial movements and are specially designed to balance the expansion or contraction caused by temperature and to correct loss of alignment. These joints extend the service life of the equipment around them.

They are used above all in the iron and steel industry, and also in mining, power generation, cement plants and non-ferrous metal production.

As well as resisting corrosion and wear, they keep working without trouble on fluids carrying particles, so the system stays in service.

As a special type, lens expansion joints can also be produced round or rectangular.

Technical Specifications and Use

ADVANTAGES OF LENS EXPANSION JOINTS

Lens expansion joints absorb large axial movements, and the greater height and pitch of their convolutions reduces the risk of the bellows clogging when particulate material is carried in the flow.

Double bellows versions, which allow axial offset and movement in several directions, are used to absorb larger movements.

Lens bellows also have a mechanical strength advantage:

  • Weld repairs on thick-walled bellows can be carried out by the plant maintenance staff.
  • The thicker wall of a lens bellows stands up better to corrosion attack.
