Expansion Joints

Pipe Expansion Joints

Pipe expansion joints are used to absorb the expansion and contraction caused by temperature difference in the heating and hot water risers of high-rise buildings. Fitted vertically in the riser, they take up that movement as the bellows opens and closes and keep the system working safely.

On a 90/70 °C heating riser the expansion is roughly 3 mm per floor. In a seven storey building (21 m) the riser expansion can be taken up by the elbows at the vent and the main header. In buildings above seven storeys, where pipe expansion joints are compulsory, they should be fitted at most every 30 metres (every ten floors).

  • Connection: threaded or weld neck
  • Nominal diameters: 1/2"–2" threaded; DN65 to DN150 weld neck
  • Pressure and temperature: PN40, 100 °C
