Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers

In a shell and tube heat exchanger one fluid flows through the tube bundle while the other flows around it inside the shell. The construction copes with high temperature and pressure and, unlike a plate unit, is tolerant of fouling fluids.

The bundle can be withdrawn for cleaning, which is why this type is preferred on steam, thermal oil and process duties where the medium is not clean. Tube material and bundle length are selected against the required capacity.
