The manual knife gate valve is a valve type that uses a gate or wedge shaped disc to control the flow of liquid through a pipeline. The gate is operated by hand, turning a lever or handwheel that raises or lowers it to open or close the valve. The gate has a sharp edge — hence the name "knife gate" — which lets it cut through solids carried in the liquid. This valve type is widely used where quick shut-off is needed, such as irrigation systems, waste water treatment plants and industrial process lines. It is also common wherever solids are expected in the fluid, because the sharp edge cuts through them and still seals.
